Jil Sander Sensations perfume once transformed me from a very rational and practical fragrance-conscious woman into a true perfume maniac. A salesperson at a tiny perfume shop in Nerja, Spain, handed me a scented blotter as I was leaving. I took it out of politeness, but when I got home, I realized I wanted it, turned around, and went back to the shop. Since then, I've used more than one bottle! When Luca Turin's "Perfume Guide" came out, I was eager to find out what it had to say about my favorite, but all I found was this dismissive phrase:
"A boring oriental-white floral scent with fresh notes, indistinguishable from a hundred others."
It wasn't even a 'review,' just one sentence.
I was disappointed: he'd criticized my favorite! When a recognized authority questions our taste, it can be upsetting. On the other hand, it's just a subjective opinion, so who cares? Luca Turin was simply wrong, and my love for Sensations hasn't faded. But I was angry. "Indistinguishable from a hundred others"? I'd never encountered anything like it! Where are all these 'hundreds' of the same kind?! I wanted to find them. Why didn't Luca Turin provide a list? I've tried countless fragrances since then, but I've never encountered anything like it.
